What is the Xchanger API?

Xchanger is a read-only REST API for currency and cryptocurrency exchange rates. It lists supported assets, returns the current rate between any two of them, and calculates converted amounts. It is a market-data service only: it does not trade, exchange, hold or transfer funds or crypto.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 1,000 requests per month with access to every endpoint, and no credit card is required. The Pro plan raises the cap to 1,000,000 requests per month.

How often are exchange rates updated?

Rates are refreshed in 10-minute windows. Every response includes an `updated` timestamp telling you when the rate you received was last fetched from our market-data provider.

Which currencies and cryptocurrencies are supported?

Every major fiat currency (identified by ISO 4217 code, e.g. USD, EUR, BRL) and hundreds of cryptocurrencies (by ticker symbol, e.g. BTC, ETH). The full, current list is shown on this page and returned by the /api/currency/currencies and /api/crypto/currencies endpoints.

Can I convert between crypto and fiat, or between two cryptos?

Yes. The /api/general/convert endpoint accepts any combination of asset types, so BTC to USD, EUR to ETH or BTC to ETH all work. Crypto rates are derived from each asset's USD price, so any pair is supported without a provider needing to list it directly.

How do I authenticate requests?

Create an API key in your dashboard and send it in the x-api-key header on every request. Keys are stored hashed, so copy the key when you create it. Requests without a valid key return a 401 error.

Are there rate limits besides the monthly cap?

Yes. Each API key can make up to 700 requests per minute. Exceeding it returns a 429 with the error code RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED; exceeding the monthly cap returns a 429 with USAGE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED. Your usage is always visible in the dashboard and via /api/admin/usage, which does not count against your quota.

Is there an OpenAPI spec or machine-readable documentation?

Yes. The docs are generated from an OpenAPI 3 document, available alongside the interactive reference, and an llms.txt index plus a full plain-text reference are published for AI tools.
